I personally prefer soaking Dal overnight so that it becomes naturally soft and does not consume much resources while being cooked. However, if you have forgotten soak the Dal at night, you can pressure cook it with more whistles in order to soften it up. Generally, you need to take 5 times more water than the quantity of Dal while cooking it. If you wish to prepare Dal for just one person, you can take half bowl of Dal and soak it for some time. You can increase the ratio according to the number of people present in the family.

If you do not have ghee at your disposal, you can also prepare Dal by using some mustard oil. The taste of the dal feels better in ghee. That gives a nutty taste to the recipe and also provide more nutrition.
