How To Prepare Dal Dhokli

If you are one of those people who do not like to consume dal everyday, Dal Dhokli is the recipe that will give a burst of flavours to the monotonous arhar dal. The traditional Gujarati dal dhokli recipe is easy to make and provides a lot of protein and Minerals. The spicy and sweet combination of wheat flour titbits combined with dal serves as a complete meal in a single bowl.


We recently came across the recipe while we paid a visit to one of the Gujarati friends. The foodie Gujarati served us with the exotic dal dhokli that was another dish that tickled my taste buds. What is traditional Dal Dhokli recipe?

Earlier, people prepared Dal Dhokli recipe by using some leftover dal and adding some wheat dough pieces into it. However, you can prepare the recipe from scratch and enjoy the savoury with your loved ones quite often. The Gujarati and the Rajasthani method of preparing Dal Dhokli is almost the same. It’s just the difference in the variety of Dal use. Rajasthanis particularly prepare dal dhokli by clubbing some moong dal in the wheat flour pieces. On the other hand, the Gujarati people prefer udad Dal to do the needful. Make sure that your Dal Dhokli recipe is slightly watery because the dough will absorb a lot of water.

 

Let us learn Dal Dhokli recipe step by step –

  • Step 1 – wash arhar dal and pressure cooker it by adding some red chilli powder, turmeric, tomato, water and salt all together.
  • Step 2 – add lemon juice and two cups of water after the Dal is prepared in the pressure cooker. Mix everything very well and follow the next step.
  • Step 3 – in order to prepare the dough for Dal Dhokli, you need to add some ajwain, turmeric powder, vegetable oil, gram flour and salt into it. knead well.
  • Step 4 – using a rolling pin prepare a raw chapati out of the dough and cut it into small square shaped pieces.
  • Step 5 – add the prepared small pieces of dough in the dal and cook for around 12 minutes in medium heat.
  • Step 6 – eventually take a pan having a little bit of ghee, cumin seeds, and mustard seeds in the same. Let them pop for few seconds and gently mix it up in the Dal Dhokli recipe.

The recipe is flavourful and tasty always. It does not have many spices but still comprises of a subtle taste to quench your palette absolutely. You can experiment with the same recipe using different flavours of Dal every day. All the ingredients used in the preparation of the recipe are conveniently available at home. Exceptionally if you do not find a particular ingredient, simply skip it up. The basic ingredients like flour, dial, salt, turmeric, oil, ghee, besan, and cumin seeds are most important.
